Forget mixing colors, this pattern proves that texture alone can make a statement!

We'll be transforming our yarn into a lovely square, perfect for cozy blankets, vibrant scarves, or anything that needs a touch of handmade warmth.

  • Instructions: Ch 3 (counts as first DC), then make 11 DC into the magic circle. (Total 12 stitches).

  • Close: Sl St into the top of the beginning Ch 3.

Round 2: Building the Base (16 DC)

  • Step : Continue building the stitch count immediately after forming the magic circle base.
  • Instructions: Ch 3 (counts as the first Double Crochet, or DC). Now, make 15 DC into your magic circle. (This results in a total of 16 stitches).

  • Close: Sl St to the top of the 3rd chain in the beginning Ch 3 to join the round.

Round 3: The Sunburst Center (Puff Stitches)

  • Step : We are now creating the Puff Stitches that form the textured center of the Sunburst.
  • Instructions:

  1. First Puff Stitch:

    • Ch 2 (This is your starting height, and does not count as a stitch).

    • Puff Stitch definition (3 pulls):

      • Yarn over (YO), insert hook into the same stitch as joining and pull up a loop. (3 loops on hook)

      • YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up another loop. (5 loops on hook)

      • YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a final loop. (7 loops on hook)

    • YO and pull through all 7 loops.

    • Ch 1 to close the Puff Stitch.

  2. Remaining Puff Stitches:

    • Work 15 more Puff Stitches in each of the next stitches from the previous round (one Puff Stitch per stitch).

    • Puff Stitch definition (3 pulls):

      • YO, insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop.

      • YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up another loop.

      • YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a final loop. (7 loops on hook)

    • YO and pull through all 7 loops.

    • Ch 1 to close the Puff Stitch.

  • Close:
  1. Total Stitches: 16 Puff Stitches (separated by Ch 1 spaces).
  2. Sl St into the first Ch 1 space (the one created after the first Puff Stitch) to join the round.

Round 4: Introducing Texture (Bobble Stitches)

  • Step : This round features the Bobble Stitch (Bo St), working into the chain spaces from the previous round to create small, rounded bumps.

  • Instructions

  1. Starting Bobble Stitch:

    • Ch 2 (This is your starting height).

    • Work a Bobble Stitch in the same space you joined:

      • Definition (4 incomplete DCs): [Yarn over (YO), insert hook into the space, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops] 4 times. (You will have 5 loops on your hook).

      • YO and pull through all 5 loops on your hook.

      • Ch 1 to close the Bobble Stitch.

  2. Repeating Bobble Stitches:

    • Repeat the following sequence 15 more times:

      • Work one Bobble Stitch in the next Ch-1 space (the space between the next two Puff Stitches).

      • Ch 1 to close the Bobble Stitch.

    • (Remember: The starting Ch 2 acts as the beginning of the first Bobble, so you only need 15 more repeats.)

  • Close
  1. Total Stitches: 16 Bobble Stitches (separated by Ch 1 spaces).
  2. Sl St into the first Ch-1 space (the space after your first Bobble Stitch) to join the round.

Round 5: The Transformation (Circle to Square)

  • Step : This is the game-changer! We are establishing the four corners of the square by working into the chain spaces from the previous Bobble Stitch round. Note the use of Treble Crochet (TR) for the corners.
  • Instructions

  1. Start Corner 1: Work this into the first Ch-1 space where you just joined.

    • Ch 3 (counts as the first TR).

    • Make 2 TR in the same space.

    • Ch 2 (this is the corner chain).

    • Make 3 TR in the same space.

    • [First corner established: 3 TR, Ch 2, 3 TR]

  2. Form Side 1: Work into the next three Ch-1 spaces to form the first side.

    • Make 3 DC (Double Crochet) in the next Ch-1 space.

    • Make 3 HDC (Half Double Crochet) in the following Ch-1 space (this is the center of the side).

    • Make 3 DC in the next Ch-1 space.

  3. Corner 2: Work into the next Ch-1 space.

    • Make (3 TR, Ch 2, 3 TR) in the next Ch-1 space.

    • [You have now completed one full side and two corners.]

  4. Repeat:

    • Repeat the sequence for Side 2 (3 DC, 3 HDC, 3 DC).

    • Work Corner 3 (3 TR, Ch 2, 3 TR).

    • Repeat the sequence for Side 3 (3 DC, 3 HDC, 3 DC).

    • Work Corner 4 (3 TR, Ch 2, 3 TR).

    • Repeat the sequence for Side 4 (3 DC, 3 HDC, 3 DC).

  • Close
  1. Sl St to the top of the beginning Ch 3 to join the round.

  2. Result: You now have a completed square! You should have 4 corners and 4 sides (each side containing one group of 3 DC, one group of 3 HDC, and another group of 3 DC).

Congratulations!

You have successfully "cooked" your beautiful One-Color Sunburst Granny Square. The texture is gorgeous, and the vibrant color is ready to be joined into your next project.
